Home Case Studies elements The Process

I created this “garden in a skip” to draw attention, in a light-hearted way, to front garden loss to paving and tarmac. Front garden loss is primarily due to parking restrictions in our streets and an increase in car ownership.

The Skip Memorial Garden, funded through sponsorship and donations, resided in the Wanstead Leisure Centre car park, within the grounds of Wanstead High School. As such, children were able to interact with it and hopefully learn something from it.

The Garden was nominated as a finalist in the Horticultural Week awards (2006). For more information, please see SKIP MEMORIAL PRESS CUTTINGS (Link).

The importance of front gardens

Trees and other plants have a beneficial effect on our environment by:

  absorbing atmospheric pollution and carbon-dioxide
Front Garden Before and After
providing a welcome habitat for wildlife
improving the appearance of homes and neighbourhoods

Streets without front gardens tend to be hotter in summer, windier in winter and more prone to flooding by rain which cannot drain away through hard surfaces.

Parking and front gardens

Council parking restrictions are encouraging residents to park in their front gardens. This does not need to be a problem if the garden is designed to allow both plants and an area for parking.
